UTHSCT gets new academic building, ICU facelift

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - The U.T. Health Science Center campus is getting ready to build its new academic center, and, because of that, move the intensive care unit is getting a facelift, too.

The new ICU was moved to the second floor of the patient tower, as well as being re-designed.

The center's vice president says doctors and nurses in this unit won't have to leave patients' bedsides as often because everything they need is at their fingertips.

"It was designed specifically by our physicians and nurses," said Rob Marshall, the UTHSCT vice president and COO. "They gave us insight into things that help them take care of patients better. They work directly with the architects and the contractors to come up with a patient-centered design for the intensive care unit."

The new ICU also has an independent power supply, a self-contained heating and air conditioning system, and a ventilation system that can provide fresh air in the rooms 19 times an hour.
