LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) - An East Texas man was going to get a ride whether someone wanted to give him one or not.

Just before 1am, Longview police say a motorist refused to give Israel Huerta, 22, a ride from the parking lot of a manufacturing business in the 200 block of Gum Springs Road. That is when, police say, Huerta took the car at knife point and then took off!

"The suspect walks up to them and asks for a ride," said Officer Kevin Brownlee, with Longview police. "The driver can't give him a ride because he's waiting to pick up someone from work."

After being refused a ride Huerta became agitated and produced a large kitchen knife. He forced the two occupants of the vehicle out, then jumped in and fled. He was spotted almost immediately by police arriving on scene. Officer Jason Boothe spotted the stolen vehicle at the intersection of South Eastman Road and South Access Road.

"There's the dangerousness of the suspect to begin with, if he produced a butcher knife and took somebody's car from them," said Brownlee. "If we don't capture him, what's he going to do next?"

Huerta lost control once, but corrected and fled again. He eventually crashed, but was defiant to the end.

"You could see in the video, as officers approached him, he wouldn't get on the ground as he's instructed to so officers took him and placed him on the ground and put him in handcuffs," said Brownlee.

Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident. Huerta is charged with aggravated robbery and evading arrest in a motor vehicle. He remains in the Gregg County Jail on $125,000 bond.
