KILGORE, TX (KLTV) - Mary Gassaway is a giving East Texas woman who has lived during the most eventful century of this world's history. Now, she getting back recognition for living such a long life, celebrating her 104th birthday.

You can call her the lady with the magic fingers - at 104 years of age, Mary Gassaway still plays her favorite piano tunes. From playing the piano to celebrating her 104th birthday, it is all amusement for Gassaway. She is so talented and loved that the mayor of Kilgore gave her a birthday proclamation.

"I'm going to claim today as Mrs. Mary Gassaway day in Kilgore," said the mayor.

With her own day and a huge birthday, Gassaway couldn't feel happier.

"All these people here, they're friends but there like kin folks," said Gassaway.

She even has a few dollars to spend.

"It will be wisely spent," said Gassaway. "I count for every dollar I spend."

"On her 100th birthday here at the manor, she got a lot of different gifts," said Frances Ward, Gassaway's proud daughter. "When she opened it she said, 'Is there a husband in there?'"

At 104, Gassaway has seen it all.

"Y'all don't forget, I had a boyfriend always...," said Gassaway. "...They were real nice. They had to be!"

She even remembers her first date.

"The first sweetheart I had, he had a new buggy and a pretty horse," she said. "He tried to put his arm around me and I said, 'We don't do that.' I wouldn't let him."

Luckily, all Gassaway wisdom is still entact and even though she doesn't giveaway her life secrets she does have advice for the aged.

"Act right," she said. "Do right."

Gassaway learned how to play the piano by ear. She has been married two times and worked as a stenographer.
