Lindale students donate 1,700 books to Boys&Girls Club

Released by the Lindale ISD:

LINDALE, TX - When students and teachers of the Lindale ISD learned their classmates at the Boys & Girls Club of Lindale were in desperate need of quality reading materials, the teachers, students and their families went into action with overwhelming results.

Exactly 1,700 books were donated in just nine school days by LISD students and faculty.  The book drive began when the students returned from the holiday break on January 5 and ended on January 15.  Students and faculty at four campuses made contributions: Early Childhood Center, Lindale Primary School, Velma Penny Elementary School and E.J. Moss Intermediate School.

Megen Bass, a teacher at Velma Penny Elementary School and liaison to the Boys & Girls Club of Lindale, organized the drive after learning of their need.  Bass placed large, decorated boxes at each campus to take in the donated books.

"I never dreamed we would get that many books," Mrs. Bass said. "I am so pleased as each club director, teacher or helper works diligently to provide instructional assistance and fun activities to our students with such devotion and commitment and with very limited resources. This project was just a small way of helping this wonderful organization build up instructional resources, which in turn, benefits our students."

The Boys & Girls Club of Lindale offers afterschool programs and services that promote and enhance the development of boys and girls in grades kindergarten-six.

About 650 of the donated books are part of the Accelerated Read (AR) program.  The AR program helps students to enhance reading skills and allows teachers to assess a student's reading strengths and weaknesses.
