The New Face of TJC Baseball

TYLER, TEXAS (KLTV) -  It's one of the most successful programs in East Texas, and a kid is in charge.

Maybe not a kid, but he sure looks like one.

TJC introduced the 2010 Apaches baseball team today, led by 26 year old head coach Doug Wren.

Wren replaces longtime coach Jon Groth, who retired after 20 plus seasons at the helm of the TJC baseball program.

"Being able to take over for a coach like that is just great," said Wren, "there is pressure that comes with it, but its nothing that I or my team can't handle."

Wren isn't much older than his players, but he does have their respect.

But they won't hesistate to give coach a hard time.

"We always tease him, we try to give him a jersey every once in a while so that he can jump in with us if he wants to try and relive his prime," said Hughes Springs native and TJC pitcher Todd Immel, "but we try to get him to come out here and take a few hacks take a few bets to see if he can hit one over every now and then, and he definately still has it."

"I have tried to set the tone early here, and let them know that I have their best and that I have their best interests in mind," said Wren, "but I also what them to know that there are expectations and that there is a line there."

The Apaches will break open their first home game on Monday, February 1st, when they host Jarvis.

One search on twitter of the hashtag "bEASTtexas", and you will be scrolling for days. The amount of talent that comes from this region is mind blowing. It is even crazier to see around 10 Major League and minor league baseball guys working out together in one room.
