TYLER, TX (KLTV) - For years, Toyota products have been known for their quality and safety. Now, its reputation may be on the line. Tuesday, Toyota announced that dealers must temporarily suspend sales of eight models following a recall for faulty accelerator pedals.

The recall is for 2009 and 2010 model Rav-4s, Corrollas, and Matrix. Avalons are also under recall, going back to the 2005 model year, Camrys going back to 2007, the 2010 Highlander, the 2007-2010 Tundras, and the 2008-2010 model Toyota Sequoias.

Ten years ago Randy Roberts' law firm prompted the largest auto defect recall in history: the Firestone tire recall. It made headlines for months.

"It was 9-11 that took it off the front page," said Roberts.

Now, Toyota's recall has gained national attention. The car maker has suspended sales and halted production of some of its most popular models following reports of gas pedals sticking.

"All indications are that Toyota is handling it properly," said Roberts.

But, he says there is something troubling with the recall, and consumers need to be aware.

"They can not look at your car and diagnose whether your car is at risk, and, more importantly, they don't know how to fix it," said Roberts.

Not knowing how to fix the problem, he says Toyota's safety reputation is in question.

"I believe Toyota tried to put out a quality product," said Roberts. "The question is, how well do they monitor their product, and did they respond quickly enough when they saw accidents were occurring?"

And, Roberts says a family he represents knows first hand.

"I'm talking to some clients right now who lost a family member after the family member took their Toyota into the dealership to be fixed," said Roberts. "For whatever reason, it wasn't fixed properly."

In an effort prevent future accidents, Toyota must pinpoint the cause of the problem.
