Raising a Saint

LINDALE, TEXAS (KLTV) - Imagine having an entire city's dreams riding on your son's foot.  Cookie Hartley felt that pressure on Sunday night.

"I pray, God please help him make this kick," said Hartley.  "Every game, I do that."

Cookie Hartley wasn't the only one praying Sunday in New Orleans.  One kick by her son Garrett, answered the prayers of an entire city.

"You could feel the vibration in the concrete floors," said Hartley of the Superdome.  "They were dancing in the aisles. They were high-fiving, hugging, crying. Strangers were coming up to the three of us and saying can we take a picture?"

Several more pictures have been taken.  Most of Garrett.  Number five has support from New Orleans to Lindale, where Cookie teaches at the early childhood center.  With shirts and signs all over the school, it's a super moment Hartley can't forget.

"It'' almost surreal," said Hartley.  "It's a wonderful, amazing adventure."

The adventure's not over.  A bigger stage awaits at the Super Bowl in Miami.  Mom will be in the stands praying for a different ending.

"From a nerve stand point, I'd almost rather him not be the last line of defense," said Hartley of her son.  "It's a pressure, that I haven't weathered yet."

A winning extra point would be just fine.

With the smallest enrollment in District 17-5A, and really across the entire classification, Lindale could use that as an excuse for a sub-par season. But under defensive coordinator, turned head coach Chris Cochran, that won't be the case.
