Cheap Eats: 3 tasty options

TYLER, TX  (KLTV) - You can call it a good deal or a lunch steal, but we call it a Cheap Eat: a meal with a non-water drink for $5 or less, including tax.

My first stop was in southeast Tyler where a newly opened restaurant is making a name for itself. Coolie J's is their name - pizza and pasta their game.

"People are looking for good value with a lot of food for a cheap price and we have all of those," said the owner, Mike Daniels.

Daniels brought the special to life in the back, piling the toppings on two hefty slices of pizza. The first oven trip melted the cheese. Then, it took a quick break for a slathering of garlic butter - a special touch leaving customers happy.

The Manager's Special, two slices of pizza and an ice cold drink, runs you $5.

Next, it was a short drive to north Tyler for a spot offering a southern delicacy. At DC Fried Ribs, cooking up good food is a joint effort. Father, Darel Cooper Sr., cooks while son, Darel Jr., spreads the word.

"We came up with these prices so that everyone in the neighborhood and surrounding areas can afford it," said Cooper.

Darel Sr. loaded up the hamburger basket to the bun bursting point. The lunch special was delivered. Plenty of fries, a hamburger, and a drink will only cost you $4.73.

Finally, it does not have a permanent address, but La Te Dogs, located on the corner of Broadway and Ferguson, doesn't need one. Twin sisters Ami Chaump and Angi Rossman got bored with computers so they went culinary, whipping up delectable dogs for dedicated customers. The cost of a Nathan's quarter pound dog, chips and a drink is $4.50, making it this week's Cheap Eats Champion - a title I taste test to make sure it is worthy.

Bonus Cheap Eat:
