Longview churches take additional precautions

LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) - Longview officials are warning churches there to be on high alert.

Pastors and parishioners are urged to review security measures and make sure alarm systems are working properly.

Police want churches to eliminate easy access by securing all windows and exterior doors with auxiliary locks, and to have exterior lighting at night.

"We haven't received any intelligence or any information from those working the fires in the Tyler area that suggests that Longview is the next potential target but I think that every church should probably be on the extra alert," said Officer Kevin Brownlee, with Longview Police.

"Our building is priceless," said Michael Schultz, with First United Methodist Church Longview. "We certainly want to provide the safeguards that would take care of our facilities and also work collaboratively with other churches to find other ways we can combine our resources."

The Longview police and fire departments have planned additional patrols at churches until a suspect is captured.
