East Texans prepare for trip, bringing aid to Haiti

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Less than a week after a massive earthquake destroyed a nation, East Texans are on the way to help. Youth with a Mission in Tyler is sending its first wave of volunteer doctors and emergency personnel to assist Haitians, now turned refugees.

There is no time to waste.

"Initially, yea, we're flying into the Dominican Republic and being bussed over," said Debbie Lascelles. "We hope that the airport in Port-au-Prince and that whole situation changes and we can fly into there real soon. But, right now, it's gonna be a rough trip."

They are preparing for a rough trip to a country that was hurting before the massive 7.0 quake struck.

"Behind the numbers...there are real people," said Glenn Price, with Mercy Works, a ministry of Youth with a Mission. "You know? Real fathers, real mothers, real children."

They are all in need of help and YWAM volunteers are ready to give.

"Personally, [I am just] just very, very sad," said Price. "Bordering on numbness."

Price is one of the dozens or so volunteers heading to Haiti next week. He has 30 years of experience working in countries living below the poverty line, and coping with disaster.

"The banks, the schools, the hospitals [and] even prisons, you know? Hundreds of prisoners have just been released from the earthquake to walk out of prison and join the streets," said Price.

The scene on the ground is grave.

"You have looting, and you've got security problems, and communication problems, transportation problems [and] bodies on the ground," said Price.

His team of doctors and volunteers will meet up with the Snows, the East Texas family living in Saint Marc, just outside of Port-au-Prince.

"We'll be sending grief councilors as well, people who are trained, and being an encouragement...to those who pretty much lost everything," said Price.

The John Tyler Lions always seem to look sharp in their uniforms. But thanks to East Texas lawyer Keith Miller, the Lions will look better and play safer. Helmets that advertise lowering the impact of hits, and possibly reduce the amount of concussions, come with a hefty price-tag. Miller's donation of 7,500 dollars, will go to help the lions cover that cost. "Keith Miller's been a big sponsor of John Tyler High School football program for years now.  I know it's...More >>

The last time we talked about the Kilgore Bulldogs, quarterback Buddy Jackson and wide receiver Jonathan Shepherd were apart of the 800-meter relay team that won gold at the 2017 state track meet. But today they are back in the pads, and looking to turn their speed into touchdowns.  Competing in District 9-4A, Kilgore has always had a strong run game that helped them become the 2016 District Champs.
