Economist gives advice to East Texas city

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Tyler's economic outlook is good, but the city still has some work to make it through the recession.

Economist Ray Perryman spoke to city leaders about Tyler's future. The good news is that jobs have increased in the last two months. Perryman says the comeback has started, but it may be late in the year before we start seeing some acceleration in the economy.

His advice is to continue to support higher education, start up companies, bio medical companies and the manufacturing sector.

"Focusing on the things that this area has done well with: you've got a lot of construction and development in the healthcare sector and that's a traditional big industry for the Tyler area," explained Perryman. "And, no matter what they do with health care reform, the one constant about health care is, no matter what else you hear about it, it keeps growing."

Perryman also advised the city to invest in infrastructure to make sure things like roads and sewer systems are in place when growth does happen. And, when it does, he says part of Tyler's future success is to get out of the way and let development happen.
