A Smith County deputy is recovering at a local hospital after being shot by an inmate.
Deputy Carolyn Hudson was returning the inmate to jail from U-T Tyler Health Center Thursday afternoon when he became violent towards her.
Police say James Edward Jones shot deputy Hudson in the leg after wrestling her to the ground, and taking her gun.
Jones was in jail on misdemeanor theft warrants and a Felony D-W-I .
The shootings didn't end at the Smith County jail.
Jones allegedly ran out onto Elm street hysterically. Witnesses say he shouted at officers repeatedly to stay away while threatening to kill himself.
That's when Tyler P-D and a Smith County deputy on foot closed in.
A Smith County Sheriff's deputy shot him.
Jones underwent surgery for his injuries and is listed in critical condition at East Texas Medical Center.
Deputy Hudson is listed in fair condition at East Texas Medical Center.
No one else was injured in the shooting
