A smith county deputy is recovering at a local hosopital after being shot by an inmate.
Deputy Carolyn Hudson was returning the inmate to jail from U-T Tyler Health Center Thursday afternoon when he turned on her.
Police say James Edward Jones shot deputy Hudson in the leg after wrestling her to the ground, and taking her gun.
Jones was in jail on misdemeanor theft warrants and a felony D-W-I.
The shootings didn't end at the Smith County jail.
Jones allegedly ran out onto Elm street hysterically.
Witnesses say he shouted at officers repeatedly to stay away while threatening to kill himself.
That's when Tyler P-D and a Smith County deputy on foot closed in.
Jones was shot by a Smith County Sheriff's deputy.
He's listed in critical condition.
No one else was injured in the shooting.
