Tyler Parks and Rec hosts tree planting event

Released by the City of Tyler:

TYLER, TX - The City of Tyler Parks and Recreation Department Trees Committee will be holding a tree planting on Saturday, Jan. 9 at 1 p.m. The event will take place at Lindsey Park, located at 1255 Spur 364 W.

Free coffee and donuts, as well as a short demonstration on proper planting techniques, will be provided to volunteers. So grab your shovel and gloves and head out to the park to help reforest Tyler! The holes for the trees will already be dug – so volunteers simply place the tree in the hole and refill the dirt.

The Trees Committee has planted more than 500 trees in Tyler in the last 20 years. The trees are purchased with funds provided by the City of Tyler and some private donations. The holes are dug by Parks and Recreation Department staff and the actual planting is executed by community volunteers.

"Planting more trees and creating a canopy negates the urban heat island effect," said Stephanie Rollings, director of the Parks and Recreation Department. "It is also a major component of the Tyler 21 Plan: to enhance the urban forest throughout the City."
