Pilgrim layoffs worry East Texas businesses

LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) - For the communities of Pittsburg and Mount Pleasant, the words lay-offs and Pilgrim's Pride, create immediate concern.

As announced Tuesday, Pilgrim's will eliminate 230 corporate and administrative jobs, 160 of them locally.

For the communities of Pittsburg and Mount Pleasant, it is unwelcome news. Pilgrim's is one of the largest employers in the area , and many businesses are depending on it to make their businesses run. Some worry about more layoffs.

"My daughter works for Pilgrim and is also threatened not knowing whether she's going to lose her job with her co-workers," said Pittsburg native Sherry Hattley.

"People are pretty uncertain what's going to happen - what the impact is going to be on the community and the citizens," said Pittsburg mayor Sean Kennington.

"My concerns are that as a business owner our businesses depend on a thriving community," said Pittsburg restaurant owner Yvonne Penn.

Pilgrim's Pride will provide severance benefits, including job placement assistance, to laid off employees.

A pair of wildlife enthusiasts made a stop in East Texas over the weekend, on June 19 they caught one of the biggest alligators found thus far in an Athens lake. But their hunting trip wasn’t all about the thrill, the roundup was to remove the gator from the site of a boy scout camp. "When it comes to Texas, warm water with woods in a pretty secluded area you're going to have alligators,” says wildlife expert Kyle Green.
