Fire truck crashes on way to fire

SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - A Smith County volunteer firefighter responding to a house fire early Wednesday morning was involved in an accident. Jackson Heights Chief Richmond Crumpton suffered minor injuries in the one vehicle wreck.

Crumpton was trying to avoid striking a deer on County Road 3119, forcing him to run off the road. The fire truck landed on its side and caused extensive damage to the tanker truck. The Smith County Fire Marshall's Office said Crumpton was on his way to assist Winona volunteer firefighters who were working on a house fire in Northeast Smith County.

The house was a total loss and authorities believe the blaze started in the fireplace.

The accident occurred shortly after 4am Wednesday.
