Released by the Mount Pleasant Police Department:

On 01/05/2010, at approximately 11:45 p.m., Mount Pleasant police officers, K-9 and Special Crimes Unit detectives initiated a narcotics search warrant at 815 West 16th Street, Trailer # 3, located in Mount Pleasant, Texas.  The Mount Pleasant K-9 Unit, Officer Joshua Hatfield, along with the MPPD Special Crimes Unit had developed information and had been conducting an ongoing investigation into the possible manufacturing of suspected marijuana from the residence.  Over the past several days officers were able to develop probable cause for the issuance of a search warrant which was obtained on 01/05/2010 by Officer Joshua Hatfield, through Justice of the Peace Judge Kay McNutt.

Upon initiating the search warrant officers secured the residence and began a thorough search. Officers soon discovered a room which contained what is believed to be a large hydroponic marijuana grow, including all the elements needed to cultivate several marijuana plants.

The plants along with all the equipment used to begin and sustain the growth of these plants were seized and logged into the MPPD property / evidence room.  The plants will be sent to the Tyler DPS Crime Laboratory for the final weight of suspected marijuana.  Taken into custody on scene was Santiago URISTA, 29, of Mount Pleasant, Texas.  URISTA was charged with a State Jail Felony of Unlawful Possession and Use of Criminal Instruments.  URISTA is pending charges of Possession of Marijuana upon the analysis and final weight of the marijuana to be determined by the crime lab.

Anytime we are able to seize an actual working hydroponic marijuana grow, we know it will effect the city directly.  The amount of plants being cultivated in this instance could produce a significant amount of marijuana which in turn would likely hit the streets of Mount Pleasant and the surrounding area.  With the inception of the new year, the goal of the police department is to once again have a relentless and significant impact on the narcotics trade in our community as in the past.  We would be unable to function without the assistance from the community and urge anyone with information concerning narcotics to contact the MPPD Special Crimes Unit at the number below or CRIME STOPPERS at (903) 572-2833.  Your name and information will always be kept anonymous.
