Retired Judge Buried in Tyler

Former Smith County Justice of the Peace Leon "Edna" Hicks" was put to rest Wednesday afternoon. The retired justice died Monday in Tyler.

Hick's legacy began in 1968 when her husband died leaving his name on the ballot for Precinct 1, Justice of the Peace. A week before the election, Hicks put her name in his place and won.

She served 22 years before retiring in 1991. Current precinct one justice, Judge Quincy Beavers attended Hicks funeral services.

"When Judge Hicks retired the whole county was at a loss," he says. "It's hard to find one like Judge Hicks."
