The new year is here – a time for renewal, change, improvement. For most east Texans, the task of learning to read is not part of our list of new year's resolutions. But for many east Texans – literally thousands – literacy is not a skill they possess. In fact, 44 million U-S adults cannot read a simple book to their child. January is Literacy Awareness Month, and with all of the lifestyle improvements and changes in routines, doesn't it make sense to give a little back in an area most of us take for granted? So we are excited to name the Literacy Council of Tyler and the East Texas Literacy Council in Longview as KLTV's Community Spotlight organizations for January. These organizations work with volunteers through local colleges and school districts to tutor and teach thousands of east Texans to read each year. Their programs are free and you can support them through cash donations and your time as a volunteer. PLease visit the Literacy Council of Tyler and the East Texas Literacy Council in Longview website to learn more. And stay tuned to KLTV for living testimonies of how lives have been changed after learning to read.
