Deputies successfully arrest man after standoff

VAN ZANDT COUNTY, TX - On December 29, 2009 at approximately 18:15 p.m. dispatchers at the Van Zandt County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call from a woman in reference to family violence. Deputies were dispatched to the disturbance on V.Z.C.R. 4821.

Upon arrival of deputies, a female ran out of the house with multiple stab wounds. The suspect, identified as Roger Daniel Beck, was barricaded in the residence and refusing to come out. During the standoff the suspect attempted to set the house on fire, while he was inside.

At approximately 21:00 p.m. an arrest warrant was issued on the suspect by Justice of the Peace Precinct #4. At approximately 21:44 p.m. law enforcement officers were able to cause a distraction at one of the entrances to the residence, to allow other law enforcement officers to place the suspect in custody without incident.

The suspect complained of chest pain and was transported to East Texas Medical Center in Tyler for evaluation. The suspect was then released and transported to the Van Zandt County Justice Center where he is awaiting to be arraigned on charges of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon/Family Violence, Arson of a Habitation and Assault on a Public Servant.

Van Zandt County Sheriff's Office was assisted by Texas Department of Public Safety Troopers, Van Zandt County Constable Office Precinct 4, East Texas Medical Center EMS and Midway Volunteer Fire Department. Investigators cleared the scene at approximately 22:40 p.m. Further charges may be pending.

Sheriff R. P. "Pat" Burnett states that this is the second time in one week that we have had a call of this nature and with all law enforcement working together both incidents were successful. This time of year is always difficult for families. If you need help please ask for it.
