LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) - Before you head out for that last minute shopping, we have a warning for you: Thieves are watching to find a way to steal your Christmas.

Packed parking lots and frenzied shoppers can be a playground for those seeking easy targets.

"Not everybody in those parking lots are there to shop," said Kevin Brownlee, with Longview Police. "There may be people in those parking lots that are shopping for things they didn't purchase; meaning things you just bought."

Shoppers can be the perfect target, with many distractions pulling at their attention.

"Have your head up," advised Brownlee. "Look around. Don't be text messaging, talking on the phone [and] not being aware of your surroundings. Always be aware of your surroundings."

"No, I'm not very good at that," said Bunny Zeilinger. "I don't watch that very good."

It only takes a matter of seconds for a car burglar to break your window virtually un-noticed reach inside grab your packages and leave. Police say it is not a bad idea to just move your car to another area before going back into a store. Also, try to secure wallets and purses coming and going.

"I keep my purse tucked under my arm tight," said Karen Head. "When I go in and come out I have my keys in my hand."

Don't stack purchases in a car in plain view. And don't get distracted.

"Always be aware of those around you who are just watching," said Head.

Police say try to park close to well lit areas and areas that have video surveillance cameras, both of which deter thieves.
