Cities celebrate state football championships

By Bob Hallmark - email

EAST TEXAS (KLTV) - Two East Texas towns are riding high this weekend, after each won their second straight state football championships. In Daingerfield, the signs were everywhere as fans celebrated their 2-A division two crown.

"It was cool" says a young fan.

"Yeah we're going to be doing a lot of bragging until somebody takes it away from us" says Daingerfield fan Johnny Hearndon.

In Carthage, all the talk was about the second straight 3-A division two title.

"We're overwhelmed. How do you say it? Off the hook, off the chain? Everybody's really really happy and excited" says bulldog fan Joyce Starks.

Less than 24 hours after winning the state title, Tiger lineman Brandon Gholston was back at his part time job at Brookshires, it hadn't quite sunk in yet.

"To win one state championship was good, then you break school history and win another one... I couldn't ask for more," says Gholston.

For Daingerfield, it's their 5th title in school history and their second in a row. Johnny Hearndon played on the 1985 state champion Tigers.

"They're going to cherish this for the rest of their life. They're not going to stop talking about it. It's going to be like it was yesterday," he says.

Their respective wins left many players awestruck.

"This morning, I woke up. It just felt like a normal game, went around town seeing more signs up, its been a lot of fun this year on the team" says Carthage Bulldogs offensive lineman Chad Kelly.

It's a feeling fans and players are getting used too.

"Hopefully won' t be the last, maybe a third one coming up soon," says Kelly.

Celebrations for both teams will be held in their respective cities this week.

The John Tyler Lions always seem to look sharp in their uniforms. But thanks to East Texas lawyer Keith Miller, the Lions will look better and play safer. Helmets that advertise lowering the impact of hits, and possibly reduce the amount of concussions, come with a hefty price-tag. Miller's donation of 7,500 dollars, will go to help the lions cover that cost. "Keith Miller's been a big sponsor of John Tyler High School football program for years now.  I know it's...More >>

The last time we talked about the Kilgore Bulldogs, quarterback Buddy Jackson and wide receiver Jonathan Shepherd were apart of the 800-meter relay team that won gold at the 2017 state track meet. But today they are back in the pads, and looking to turn their speed into touchdowns.  Competing in District 9-4A, Kilgore has always had a strong run game that helped them become the 2016 District Champs.
