Seven East Texas schools on TEA's PEG list

By Taylor Hemness - email

The Texas Education Agency released its PEG, or Public Education Grant, list this week. It lists campuses statewide that have either been rated academically unacceptable, or have failed the TAKS test in two of the last three years, and seven campuses from Tyler ISD and Longview ISD are on it.

Dogan, Hogg, and Stewart Middle Schools are listed from Tyler ISD. Forest Park Magnet School, Judson Middle School, and Valley View and Ware Elementary Schools made the list in Longview.

Normally, if a school is on this list, students there can transfer to another campus or even another district with the proper approval.

But in Tyler, it's not so cut and dry. KLTV 7 spoke to Tyler ISD tonight, and the district is under the Federal Desegregation Order that's been in place for decades, so just because a child attends a Tyler school on the PEG list, doesn't mean a transfer will be granted. School districts are required to send a letter to parents outlining their options by February 1, 2010 to explain their options.
