History-making East Texan dies in car wreck

LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) - James Johnson, the former Longview City Councilman and Gregg County Commissioner, died in a car wreck in Harrison County on Saturday.

The 76-year-old was Longview's first African-American City Council member and served four three-year terms beginning in 1977.

In 1989, he became the first African-American person elected to the Commissioner's Court.
