TYLER, TX (KLTV) - A veteran Army nurse, Shirley Markey was involved in a car accident in 2000 that resulted in the loss of one of her legs. She grew accustomed to a single prosthetic leg. But when she recently lost her other leg, she decided the wheelchair was not for her.

Shirley Markey has new legs and is proud of them. She says she would rather go through rehab and endure a little pain than be stuck in a wheelchair.

Prosthetician Mac McLellen is impressed with Shirley's quick progress. He says usually it takes people much longer to be released to their homes.

Shirley looks forward to becoming independent again. She plans on going shopping Monday.

Shirley Markey says she appreciates all the help she has received from Waterton Inn Assisted Living in Tyler.
