TYLER, TX (KLTV) - The Smith County deputy, killed in a car crash last week, was laid to rest Monday. The funeral service for Brandon Bennett took place at Friendly Baptist Church in Tyler.

Bennett, who was named Rookie of the Year just hours before he died, was escorted by local law enforcement to Concord Cemetery in Troup.

Friends and family described him as a man with a big-heart and outgoing personality.

"He was going to excel at anything because of his love and his caring," said Jan Obar, Bennett's relative. "He was just a precious precious man."

"Everybody liked him," said James Hamilton, Bennett's great-uncle.

A memorial fund in honor of Deputy Bennett has been set up. It is at Southside Bank, under the name Jennifer Bearden Family.
