TYLER, TX (KLTV) - David Shelley was born five weeks prematurely, with a condition called hypoplastic left heart syndrome. Only one side of his heart worked, and he survived heart surgery when he was just 10 days old.
Now, four years later, he has been chosen as this year's Miracle Child for the Children's Miracle Network at Trinity Mother Frances. His parents say it is proof of something they have known for a long time.
"He's had a hard fight," said Garth Shelley, David's father. "Three major heart surgeries, and it is a miracle that he's here with us. He's here for a purpose, and I think he's fulfilling part of his purpose right now."
David will get to turn on the Christmas tree lights in downtown Tyler on Thursday. His parents say that doctors have told them that as long as the right side of his heart holds up, he will be fine.
