Police investigate forged check scheme

Released by Sgt. Darin Grissom, Tyler Police Department:

TYLER, TX- On November 25, 2009 the Tyler Police Department received a call from Woody Weaver Pharmacy located at 2722 W. Gentry regarding forged checks the business had received.

Over a period of time on this date, several Hispanic males entered the business and presented checks for cashing.  The checks were issued by a business out of Dallas named AMS.  Each of the checks presented was made payable for several hundred dollars.

Using a computerized system, the employees validated the checks and believed they were actual checks issued to the suspects.  It was not until later that the pharmacy was made aware that the checks were fraudulent.

The police department wants to warn area businesses that cash checks to thoroughly investigate each check prior to cashing them.  DO NOT rely solely on computerized systems to validate checks.

This case is under investigation and will be forwarded to investigators for follow-up.
