TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Zhu Zhu Pets are the hottest toy this holiday season, but they're no where to be found. Local retailers are sold out, and they don't know when they will get more in stock.
They crawl and squeak. They're just like real hamsters without the responsibility or mess.
"It's just like when Elmos were big [and] Cabbage Patch Kids," said Angela Creel, with Target. "Zhu Zhu Pets are super popular. We can't keep them on the shelves."
We searched around town for the battery operated creatures, but everywhere we went (Target, Toys-R-Us, and Wal-Mart) the Zhu Zhu Pets could not be found.
"Within a 50 miles radius, all the Wal-Marts are currently sold out," said Rosa Villanueva, with Wal-Mart.
Some specialty toy stores aren't even bothering with the craze.
"With me being just a single store owner, it would be real difficult for me to get them in," said Sandra Kirkpatrick, owner of Adventures in Learning.
"We get calls everyday," said Angela Creel. "We have no idea when anything comes in. It is kind of hit or miss."
That's how Candi Mace got Zhu Zhus for her son. She was in the right place at the right time
"I was at Toys R Us one morning when they opened and they had just got their truck, and I was waiting for them when they put them out on the shelves," said Mace.
But, what about the anxious holiday shoppers?
"They found out they were sold out and they almost started crying," said Rayne Calhoun, 10.
Of course, there's always Ebay. The only catch is the cost. Normally they cost around $8, but there, the bids go up to $40.
"We sold a house and hamster together and it went for $55," said Mace.
And, as she profits, the quest for this year's cuddly must-haves is on.
