TYLER, TX (KLTV) - When it comes to Thanksgiving dinner, turkey and trimmings can gobble up your money. But, have no fear! You can make a family feast for less than $20.
"We've come down on prices from everything from bananas, turkeys, vegetables [and] everything you need for a holiday dinner," said Lyndal Allen, the store manager at Wal-Mart.
With retailers slashing prices, we set out to find the best bargains. First, we went in search of the turkey.
"Last year...the average price of a turkey was $1.19 a pound," said Allen.
"We have them (turkeys) at $.59 a pound regularly, but for the holidays we have them at $.39 a pound," said Regina Helms, a service trainer at Super 1 Foods.
Helms said at that price, an average size turkey will cost around $5. What was next on our list? Vegetables.
"One of our best deals is going to be these 15 pounds bag of russet potatoes," said Helms. "Usually they run close to $6, maybe a little less, now, we have them on sale for $2.98 a bag."
"We have $.50 green giant vegetables, which are normally $.98," said Allen.
And, don't forget your stuffing. We found a twin pack of Stove Top dressing costs only $1.50. Usually one package costs $1.68.
The final items on the list were bread for $.75, and dessert. Baked pies at Super 1 were just $3 - a price significantly less than their usual $5.25 amount.
In all, a similar meal will cost less than $20.
So, on "turkey day," be grateful for the food on your table that didn't cost a fortune. You may need to hurry in while the food and deals last. Wal-Mart said they have already run out of their cheapest turkeys.
