TYLER, TX (KLTV) - A Tyler church is trying to help ease the struggle for East Texans, by offering Thanksgiving food for the needy. For over a decade, members of First Baptist Church of Tyler have banded together to help the needy during the holidays, and this year there are many in need.
"We'd probably be amazed at how many people live in the street today, and have no place to live no place to go no food to eat. We have a lot of them come through our doors every day" says First Baptist Church reverend Pat Mallory.
Through donations by church members, the annual Thanksgiving food distribution helps those who really need it. Perhaps now more than ever.
"And its getting harder for us to help people because of the economic times" Mallory says.
Some work for modest wages, and need the food to make ends meet.
"Some of us don't have a lot of money right now, every little bit helps so, this is a good way to give back to the community , its really appreciated" says food recipient Kelly King of Tyler.
Others have no money , and sometimes are on their last legs.
"Some of them have just lost really good jobs and its really hard once you get down, to get back up" says Mallory.
But it gives something really needed, to those in need.
"It gives us hope, it really does" king says.
The program gave out nearly 700 bags of food and hams.
