Downtown property demolition begins

Released by Susan Guthrie with the City of Tyler:

What: Demolition of buildings on eight acres of City-owned property will begin Tuesday.

When: Beginning Nov. 17, 2009 and continuing until complete.

Where: The corner of Bonner and Ferguson in Downtown Tyler.

In 2007, the City of Tyler adopted the Tyler 21 Plan which created a shared vision for Tyler's future as well as goals and action plans to realize that vision. An entire chapter of the Plan is dedicated to the revitalization of Downtown.

Goal 2b of Chapter 4 of the Tyler 21 Plan calls for the City to assist in land assembly, particularly in the western portion of Downtown. Consequently, in 2008, the City acquired eight acres in western Downtown Tyler. The property will be used for future municipal needs and private reinvestment that will spur revitalization efforts in Downtown.

"This was an important acquisition for Downtown revitalization efforts," said City Manager Mark McDaniel. "It puts the City in a great position to attract private reinvestment in the area. Since we have the tax increment reinvestment zone in place, any incremental increases in property tax collections will be directly reinvested back into the Downtown. Projects like this are the catalyst for new investment."
