TYLER, TX - Orr Elementary will receive a special United States Flag to be flown next school year in front of the new school. The Crew of the USS NEW YORK raised the flag on the morning of November 2, 2009 and flew it for 24 hours.

“We are thrilled with the opportunity to fly such a special flag,” said Orr Elementary Principal, Walter Perez.

The USS NEW YORK arrived in New York harbor on Monday, Nov. 2. She officially became a ship of the United States Navy at a formal commissioning ceremony on Saturday, Nov. 7. She will remain in the harbor and open to visitors until Veteran’s Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11.

The recently commissioned US Navy ship was built with steel from the World Trade Center's twin towers destroyed during the 9/11 attacks in New York City. The ship’s bow stem includes seven and a half tons of steel recovered from the Twin Towers.  The Ship's motto is 'Strength forged through sacrifice. Never forget.'

Sgt. Danielle Bacon, the daughter of Jeff Palmer, an Orr Elementary Fourth Grade Science Teacher, serves on the USS New York.
