TYLER, TX (KLTV) - An East Texas student gets to learn first-hand what it takes to run a city.
Katie Rhodes, a Van High School student, shadowed Tyler Mayor Barbara Bass Wednesday. The "Mayor for a Day" program also raises money for non-profits in Tyler.
Rhodes started the day by attending Tyler's city council meeting, then went with Mayor Bass to a presentation for Veteran's Day.
"It was very interesting," said Rhodes. "I was glad to see how the council was actually run and I'm glad I wasn't completely lost. I was expecting some like all the stories of the weird politicians so they're very respectful and honorable."
"It's a great way to see how city government works, and it's a wonderful way for the city to help the non-profits in their fundraising," said Mayor Bass.
Rhodes says she is interested, not only in politics, but also anesthesiology.
