CHEROKEE COUNTY, TEXAS (KLTV) - Democratic State Representative Chuck Hopson said neither the president, or Congress represent the conservative East Texans' conservative values.
He's announced he's going Republican.
Representative Tommy Merritt said he's honored to have Hopson join the GOP. In a statement, he said, "Hopson has always represented the conservative values of his district with integrity and distinction."
However, local Democratic leaders have now added distrust to that list.
Joanna Reagan, president elect of Texas Democratic Women and former chair of Cherokee County Democratic Party said just days ago, Rep. Hopson was still running as a Democrat and soliciting funds from Democrats.
"I wrote a check to him that was just deposited a week ago," she said. Reagan is asking for that money back.
"There are a lot of issues that his new party do not support, and I don't know if we're going to be able to trust that vote any longer," she said.
Reagan and other democratic leaders are urging other supporters to ask for their donations back. She said it's clear Rep. Hopson has been considering this decision for quite some time. She said it's not in the best interest of District-11 constituents.
