PITTSBURG, TX (KLTV) - Thomas Hill lied about his age when he joined the Army at age 16. But, he was to grow up fast during the Korean War when he fought in one of the most ferocious battles of the war, the Battle of Heartbreak Ridge.
The Battle of Heartbreak Ridge was a month long battle fought between September 13 and October 15, 1951. The ridgeline, called "Heartbreak" by American infantrymen changed hands many times in an exhausting series of attacks and counterattacks. After a month of combat, the Americans and French eventually gained upper hand and secured Heartbreak Ridge. But, not without high casualties: Over 30,000 American and French and an estimated 25,000 North Korean and Chinese were killed or wounded.
Thomas Hill had many brushes with death during his time in Korea, but he was spared. Many were not. Over 33,000 American soldiers lost their lives in battle in Korea's "undeclared" war.
