GILMER, TX (KLTV) - Gilmer drivers may have to be more cautious when it comes to school zones.
"It is going to be a little bit more inconvenient, probably going to cost a folks a few more seconds out their day," said one Gilmer resident.
That's because the school speed zone hours are about to be extended from nearly fours to just about all day.
"We're not on the highway so we don't have the blinking lights," said Officer John Finney, a school resource officer at Gilmer High School. "We have students crossing all day long and we get quite a bit of traffic. We've worked on cross walks, we've put up signs and people still going a little too fast."
A new city ordinance will extend school zone hours from 7:30am until 4:30pm on several streets surrounding Gilmer High School. So what do drivers think about the new ordinance?
"All drivers want to go as fast they can, at all times, but there are some times when you need to slow down, and certainly a school zone is one of those places," said Gilmer citizen Steve Dean. "Slowing down all day long? That's not a bad deal."
"At first you're going to have some people that will take their annoyance out behind the wheel, and they'll just breeze on through," said Stephanie Rodriguez of Gilmer. "It may take a few tickets."
"I know that it's going to prolong the time and inconvenience some people but for the safety of our students I'm willing to sacrifice," said Lewis Fluellen, a Gilmer resident.
The ordinance for the extended school hours is scheduled to be adopted new Tuesday at the Gilmer City council meeting. City officials say that's when the new school zone hour signs will be ordered. They hope to have those signs up and posted by the end the month.
