TYLER, TX - The Tyler Public Library has a perfect solution for area residents of all ages who are looking for another place to wear a costume this October. "Dressed to Read" encourages readers of all ages to don outrageous hats, silly slippers or costumes and visit the Library anytime between Oct. 24 and Nov. 1. Everyone who comes in costume to the Library during regular Library hours that week will receive a used book of their choice from the Library Book Nook, which offers low-cost books for sale throughout the year.

"If you have trouble keeping your preschooler out of his superhero cape or convincing your granddaughter to shed her princess tiara, or if you just can't bear to wear your costume only one day of the month, put on your dress-up clothes and head to the Tyler Public Library," says Evelyn McLane, Library programming associate.

"Over the past three months, we have been collecting a stash of ‘previously loved and gently read' books for children and adults in anticipation of this event," said McLane. "Like all of our sale items, these books have been donated or withdrawn from the Library shelves. They don't meet our current collection needs, but each one deserves a loving home."

To receive a free book, simply come to the Library in costume, Saturday, Oct. 24 through Sunday, Nov. 1 during Library hours. The Library is open Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m. - 7 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.; and Sunday, noon - 4 p.m. Costumes should be in good taste and suitable for a general audience.

"Costumed folks may check in at any circulation or information desk," says McLane, "and staff will direct them to books from which they can make a selection. We do ask our patrons to limit themselves to one book. As an added bonus, Library patrons will find many of the staff going about their work in the costume representing literary characters during the week."

Tyler Public Library is located at 201 S. College in downtown Tyler. For more information, contact the Library by phone at (903) 593-7323 [READ] or email at programs@tylertexas.com.

The Tyler Public Library houses over 200,000 items and has almost 20,000 cardholders. Nearly 58,000 people visited the Library from January to March of 2009, and more than 60,000 items were circulated. In addition, two dozen Internet access workstations are in constant use seven days a week.
