WHITE COUNTY, AR (KAIT) - A man is in jail after a standoff with state police charged with sexually assaulting an 11-year-old in White County.
According to the White County Sheriff's Department, on Friday October 9th police were dispatched to home on Lynn Street where a crowd had formed outside the home.
Once police arrived on the scene, they were notified that the man inside the home was accused of sexually assaulting an 11-year-old. Police say 52-year-old Stephen Spencer Carter was inside the home, and was afraid to come out because of the large crowd. Once police made contact, Carter agreed to talk to police the following morning. Carter never showed, and police learned he left the residence shortly after police left the scene.
A few days' later police learned Carter was new to the White County area, moving from Marion, Arkansas, where similar allegations were filed about two or three months ago.
On Wednesday showed up at Carter's place of employment in Cabot. Once approached by police, Carter armed himself with a handgun and a standoff ensued. After several hours, the Arkansas State Police Swat Team was able to take Carter into custody.
Stephen Carter is charged with one count of sexual assault in the 2nd degree and is currently being held in the White County Detention Center with no bond.
