Jacksonville hires Freddy Thomas as new finance director

Released by the City of Jacksonville:

JACKSONVILLE, TX - The City of Jacksonville welcomed a new member into its fold last week, Finance Director Freddy Thomas. This is Thomas' first foray into municipal government, having spent the last 30 years in the private sector.

Thomas, a native of Corsicana, graduated from Baylor University in 1980 with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. Since leaving school he has worked as an auditor, a bank loan officer, and most recently as director of valuation for Dallas-based accounting firm Weaver and Tidwell L.L.P.

According to Thomas, working as finance director for the city will allow him to focus on an all-new side of numbers.

"I have been a CPA (certified public accountant) for a long time, but I've never really worked with the source product, I have always just dealt with the end product," Thomas said. "I've never been involved in the debits-and-credits side of finance, and that's something that I am looking forward to."

Thomas said moving to Jacksonville from Dallas will be an adjustment, but a welcomed one. He said he is looking forward to more standardized hours then he enjoyed at the accounting firm.

In his new office for only a week, Thomas said he hasn't had time yet to delve deeply into Jacksonville's finances, but he said casual inspection of the city's numbers have left him feeling optimistic.

"The city is like a lot of other municipalities right now in that things are kind of tight and it needs some more cash on hand," he said. "But I haven't seen anything that leads me to believe we are in dire straits, we are just going to need to put in some work in order to improve things."

Mayor Dr. Robert Haberle said Jacksonville is lucky to have a person of Thomas' qualifications joining the city staff.

"We are glad to have him joining us, and we are eager to get him up to speed and on his feet so he can help us chart our course through the financial waters of these tough economic times," Haberle said.

Thomas has been a member of the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants since 1990. He is an accredited senior appraiser with the American Society of Appraisers and is accredited in business valuations with the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
