Bomb squad called, East Texas community evacuated

FRANKSTON, TX (KLTV) - It was a scary wake up call for some East Texans Friday morning. It started when police got a 'shots fired' call in the Briarwood Bay community near Lake Palestine. That's when officers found 50-year-old Ernest Ray Troxell with a self inflicted gunshot wound to the shoulder. At Troxell's request, authorities went to his home, finding an illegal sawed off shotgun and a live pipe bomb in the driveway. A bomb squad was called in from Louisiana to detonate the bomb. ATF officials also evacuated neighbors away from the potentially fatal explosive.

"It was pretty scary now but that's the reason they wanted me to leave," said Rubey Putnam. "Well, I went to sleep, and police woke me up around four o'clock knocking on my window and told me I'd have to evacuate. I hope they put him in jail."

Residents were allowed back into their homes around a little before seven in the morning. Troxell now faces charges of possessing a prohibited weapon and an explosive device.
