LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) - It was an adoption in the making for 24 years. Now, an East Texas mother and daughter are "legally" united.
For Sharon Morris and her 26-year-old daughter Jennifer, it was a new beginning.
"I just love her to death," said Sharon, who adopted Jennifer from a Houston-based adoption agency when she was 2 and a half, but the paperwork was never finalized. "Two years ago, when I went to get social security for my daughter and medicare for her, the social security office said, 'Mrs. Morris, you are not her adopted daughter.'"
"It devastated me. I couldn't function. It took every thing I [had] just to get up in the morning. Some days I didn't even want to go see Jen because in my heart I was like you're mind but they say you're not mine."
To make the adoption legal, Sharon hired attorneys, to settle the paper work. Now, 24 years later, their official adoption day is here.
"I hereby grant the adoption and declare that she is your daughter for all legal purposes from today forward," Judge Robin Sage, said granting adoption from the bench. "Congratulations! It's official! She's all yours now!"
A truly special adoption that was well worth the wait.
"She's worth it," said Sharon. "She's my everything! She is once and for all, forever and all time...mine."
Sharon takes the bus two to three times a week to see Jenny. Sharon says her wish is to have her own handicap van, so she could drive and see Jenny whenever she likes.
