Freedom Fighters: Bill Luther

By Joan Hallmark - bio | email

CHANDLER, TX (KLTV) - Bill Luther joined the Army Air Corps in 1943. By the time he got overseas, the Allies were driving deep into Europe.

Piloting a B-17 Bomber with a crew of 10, Luther was soon involved in bombing missions over Berlin, where the German Army had been ordered to defend the city at any cost. Luther says the anti-aircraft flak was almost a solid curtain between his plane and the ground. Luther's plane was hit a number of times but never downed.

As the war was winding down, Luther's last two flights took a different turn. One was to rescue American prisoners of war and the other what he calls a "chow drop" to the starving people of Holland.
