TYLER, TX (KLTV) - East Texans are still reeling from the sudden and tragic loss of John Tyler High School teacher Todd Henry. Today, the community gathered at Green Acres Baptist Church in Tyler to pay their respects. Friends shared fond memories of Todd Henry the musician, son, father and beloved husband.
"We kind of had a special relationship," said close friend George Faber. "He would always [give] encouragement, and a lot of people don't know that."
Faber says words can't describe the mark Todd Henry will leave here in East Texas. Mr. Henry was a passionate and compassionate symbol of grace.
"Todd was a big man with a big heart," said a local pastor.
"He was always that person that would me and just say 'hey man,' keep it going," said Faber. "I'm going to miss my brother and my friend."
Jan - Todd Henry's loving wife, watched on from the pews. She was sometimes overcome with emotion. But, for the most part, Mrs. Henry sat with a smile, strolling down a photographical lane of memories.
"Todd experienced a love that surpassed his love for music," said the pastor. "They enjoyed traveling. They enjoyed staying home. They enjoyed eachother."
And, as difficult as it was this morning for friends and family to say good-bye. . .
"Leaving us behind is a painful thing," said the pastor. "But, think about this. How many people in Heaven can say that the last year of my life was the best year of my life - Todd can say that."
The service ended just as those who knew him best say he would have wanted it to; a final curtain call - the ultimate sign of respect for the man whose music will live on forever.
Todd's family is asking those who wish to send flowers in his memory to instead donate to the Todd Henry Musical Scholarship at: c/o Cooperative Teacher's Credit Union, 1424 WSW Loop 323, Tyler, TX 75701.
Todd Henry is survived by his wife Jan, and three step-children.
