Released by Adrienne Graham with Smith County:
SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - Precinct 2 Commissioner Bill McGinnis will be presented with the Award for Juvenile Impact during the 87th Annual County Judges and Commissioners Association Conference in Corpus Christi on October 8.
Commissioner McGinnis was nominated for the award after coordinating efforts to refurbish unclaimed bicycles and redistribute them to needy youths in the community.
In April, 2009, with the approval of the Smith County Commissioners Court, he delivered over a dozen bicycles to Henry Marsh Bell Lodge # 1371 in Whitehouse. For the past fifteen years, the lodge has received donated bikes and refurbished them to give to children in need.
The bikes donated by Smith County had been recovered by the Smith County Sheriff's Department, but never reclaimed. As part of the countywide clean-up effort, they were identified by the clean-up committee as surplus.
"I'm very proud to have won this award. When the bikes came to my attention through my wife Lynn and her Smith County Clean-up Committee, I immediately thought of the program at Henry Marsh Bell Lodge." Commissioner McGinnis said. "But, above and beyond any award my peers may give me, I have the greater reward of knowing that some needy kids will have lots of fun on those bikes."
