TYLER, TX (KLTV) - It was the heckle heard round the world. South Carolina Representative Joe Wilson's outburst of "You lie" was quickly denounced by both sides.
"It was stunning," Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said, "to hear such a statement made on the floor of the House."
"Totally disrespectful," Senator John McCain (R-AZ) said. "No place for that in that setting."
While Presidents have been heckled before and sometimes worse, the fact the statement came from the floor of the House bothered East Texans.
"Very inappropriate," Nicole Hernandez said. "Rude. it doesn't matter what party you're from, you should respect the President."
"I don't feel it was appropriate," Jack Scott said. "There's a time and a place for everything, and that wasn't the place."
"A Senator of someone like that in that capacity," Nick Udofia said, "even if the President was wrong, you should be able to deal with that in a reasonable manner."
For his part, Wilson apologized but said his constituents stand behind him.
"I've been overwhelmed by phone calls from constituents, people of the second district who say 'Joe, thank you for speaking up for us. Thank you for your passion for the people you represent, because you understand."
