A jet-ski without a driver

LAKE PALESTINE, TX (KLTV) - A prank on the lake transfroms a jet-ski into a missile on the water. It happened around seven this morning when thieves stole a jet ski near the northeastern shore of Lake Palestine.

Thieves then rigged the jet-ski to run without a driver that put the watercraft on a collision course with anything or anyone in its path.

The quiet labor day weekend ended this morning for Todd Wright.

"I woke up and just looked outside and I  couldn't believe it." Wright said

His family's jet-ski enjoyed for years was gone.

"The chain was still there along with the lock but the jet-ski was not," adds Wright.

Ripped right off the locked chain, thieves didn't take it for the usual joyride.

"It was obvious it was a malicious attempt by somebody," says Game Warden Chris Green, "Some knucklehead to rig this thing up to where it was completely run."

Once stolen the thief rigged the controls turning this jet-ski into a missile on the open water. A glove wrapped around the throttle kept the speeds high while rope wrapped around the kill switch kept the motor running until the point of impact.

"It was a deadly weapon coming across the lake unmanned and it couldve hit anybody," says Green.

Luckily it didn't, Green says the 9-1-1 call came from a man fishing with his three year old son who watched the unmanned jet-ski speed by.

"If it did hit somebody and there was a fatality then they're looking at possible homicide charges."

Crime on the lake is rare Green says, but he plans on giving the pranksters a proper punishment.

"I'm sure they're going to get a kick out of it on the news but we're gonna get a kick out of it when we catch them," Green adds.

Authorities say the search for the thieves is under investigation. Rewards may be offered for anyone with information.
