Merritt announces 2nd annual Chris Davis Day

Longview fans will again have the opportunity to cheer on Texas Ranger and Longview native Chris Davis on September 27 at the Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.

State Representative Tommy Merritt announced that his office has once again coordinated with the Texas Rangers Baseball team to honor former Longview Lobo Chris Davis. Fans will be greeted by Rangers players when entering the ballpark. The game is at 2:05 pm against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Rep. Merritt stated, "Last year over 400 hundred Longview fans bought tickets for Chris Davis Day. Chris's solid determination and faith are outstanding qualities for our youth to follow in their daily lives. This is an excellent opportunity for fans to show their pride and support for Chris."

"Chris will be greeting his fans as they walk in the gate as it is fan appreciation day. Chris is most appreciative of the city of Longview and the community of East Texas supporting him in being a professional baseball player located here in Texas. We're truly fortunate to have a young man like Chris Davis representing Longview."

Tickets are available: September 7 at noon until September 17 at noon at the following locations:

  • Longview News Journal, 320 E. Methvin St. from 9am to 4pm, Monday through Friday.
  • Longview Mall Simon Guest Services (just off center court) Monday - Friday 11am to 7pm. Saturday 10am - 9pm. Sunday 1pm - 5pm.

Like Longview, Lufkin is always talented. Before the Panthers begin District 12-6A action, they'll play a loaded East Texas schedule featuring the Lobos in week 1, followed by Nacogdoches and John Tyler. Normally a 7 and 4 campaign would be considered a success, but not in Panther nation. In fact, despite making the playoffs every year, Lufkin hasn't advanced past the first round since 2012.

Our Red Zone Rundown continues with the other two Class 6A programs in East Texas. In District 11-6A with John Tyler and Tyler Lee, who we featured Monday night, Longview figures to challenge for the league title in 2017. In fact, the Lobos and Lions shared the district championship a year ago. It's no secret, Longview is used to winning and it does so by running the football and playing sound defense.
