CANTON, TX (KLTV) - Every year shopping for school supplies is the same, but just a little different.
Like other mothers, Canton's Beth Miller takes her kids school supply shopping as a family excursion.
"My mom did the same thing," Miller said. "It was always fun to pick out what you wanted, so I'm trying to do the same with my children."
From glue sticks to graphing calculators, as kids grow and change, so do their needs.
"I suspect in another year or two, they'll be completely different," Miller said of her children aged 8, 5, and 2. "Every year it seems like we're buying more."
Every summer the family makes the trip to the store, and Beth tries to prepare her kids for their next challenge.
"It's absolutely amazing to watch the development and growth, coming from being happy with big fat crayons and scrap paper, to the whole 'I need a scientific calculator.'"
"It's all about what you can do make their lives easier, and a little bit better than you had it.
"It's just so emotional, there's tons of mixed emotions. You're excited for them to become a little more independent, and get that slice of their own life."
"At the same time, that means a little less they need you. Nobody's ever really ready for that."
Every year, moms and dads buy pens and pencils. Every year, their children write the future.
