Army of firefighters battle blaze in Smith County

By Kelly Hefelfinger - email

Around 6:15 Monday night, fire crews rushed out to a burning house on Frederick Circle, near Flint in Smith County.

Investigators tell us they think the fire started near a microwave in the home's kitchen, then shot up the wall and went into the attic.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire inside the kitchen and a nearby bedroom.

The family that lives in the home was not there at the time.

Neighbors tell us before firefighters arrived, they rushed to try and save pets trapped inside. Eventually crews were able to get a dog, a kitten and a pet rat out of the home safely.

During the fire, a man was handcuffed for allegedly attempting to open up a fire hydrant before firefighters could connect to it.

Investigators say the man claimed to be a flint-gresham volunteer firefighter, but the department denied that claim.

Investigators say they gave the man a warning.
